The hack involved the use of phishing emails on behalf of local authorities, which were about "responsible for distributing government COVID-19 Assistance Funds". Phishing emails are designed to lure recipients to fake websites and then get personal and financial information that can be tricked into giving away. Cyfirma has identified the following email as a mock account for the phishing scheme: covid19noe@usda.gov; ccff-applications@bankofengland.co.uk; covid-support@mom.gov.sg; covid-support@mof.go.jp; ncov2019@gov.in; fppr@korea.kr.
