On June 17, Coinbase officially announced an open source specification and tool called "Rosetta" that can make integration with blockchain easier, faster and more reliable. According to the announcement, Coinbase originally developed Rosetta as middleware to securely and easily integrate blockchain into its platform, "in hopes of reducing developer and encryption platform development and integration time."
Rosetta's goal is to standardize how it interacts with the blockchain, making it easy for anyone to build on it for a variety of use cases. For developers of new blockchain projects, the Rosetta interface will make it easier to ensure compatibility with exchanges using Rosetta, significantly speed up the time the trading platform can integrate with the new blockchain, and protect customer funds by ensuring certain security conditions are met.
The article states that as an open source web of software, it's easy for anyone to contribute to Rosetta, and so far, several blockchain teams are starting to provide feedback and support, including Filecoin, Celo, Near, Oasis, Coda, Ontology, Kadena, Blockstack, and Sia.
Currently, Coinbase has made Rosetta guidance public, including complete documentation and common development questions that the Coinbase team has learned from years of talking to blockchain developers and customers. In particular, However, Coinbase stresses that supporting Rosetta tools, or finding relevant information on the Rosetta web site, does not guarantee that a project will go live on Coinbase.
