BlockBeats news, Keep Network today launched a blog to reveal details of why tBTC suspended deposits on May 18. According to Keep, on the morning of May 18, 2020, the team decided to temporarily suspend deposits on the TBTCSystem contract for 10 days after a roughly 48-hour upgrade test of ethereum and the main bitcoin network. The team triggered the pause after discovering a major problem in the redemption process for deposit contracts. The reason is that when certain types of bitcoin addresses are used in redemptions, there is a risk that the signer bonds with outstanding deposits will be liquidated.
Keep Network believes that the incident started at the time of tBTC deployment, and that the specific problem occurred on March 15, 2020, with the creation of the classification pool for the tBTC system. But the deployment of the allocation pool itself does not put any money at risk. About three days after the pool began, several signers provided guarantees and authorized the pool, but only three signers registered in the pool for use during the account opening period. But the three signers are controlled by an entity that helps the team when it is fully set up as it tests deposits and redemptions.
According to Keep deposit by alpha dApp in https://dapp.tbtc.network/, deposit size will be limited to 0.001 BTC. The ETH bonds provided by the three signer in use also cap the production of TBTC, as each TBTC requires 1.5 times its value in ETH to be bonded. On the night of May 15, 2020, dApp was briefly shut down while investigating a potential problem, but was reactivated on May 16 when the potential problem was known. In addition, some members of the community set up local versions of dapps and used them to set up deposits.
Problems ensued, and at 2:29 p.m. on May 18, the operating entity controlling the three signers attempted to redeem the deposits they had opened, but failed to complete the redemption process. They contacted a member of the team.At 3:13 UTC, the operators found that they were still unable to cash in, so the tBTC team used the local version of dApp to investigate the problem, and found a major problem with the deposit contract, "sending a value to the wrong public key hash." This error indicates that the proof built by dApp to prove that the ethereum chain has successfully completed the redemption is incorrect; In particular, the certificate failed to prove that the transaction sent the BTC holdings of the deposit to the correct redeemer's address.
