On April 28, 2020, UK payments industry startup Checkout.com announced its entry into Libra society. This is Libra's 24th member and the first payment platform to join the association since payment giants Visa, MasterCard and Stripe pulled out last October.
Founded in 2012, Checkout.com is based in London and focuses on providing cross-border payment solutions. Its international payment clients include samsung, Easygroup, Getty Images, Deliveroo, Transferwise, Adidas and Pizza Hut. In 2019, Checkout.com raised about $230 million in funding from investors including Insight Partners, DST Global, Singapore's sovereign wealth fund GIC, Blossom Capital and Endeavor Catalyst.
Checkout.com founder and chief executive, Guillaume Pousaz said in a statement released on April 28th, the goal and the concept of Checkout.com, "established Checkout.com, we have been working to improve interactive business and financial services. Everything we do is by helping to optimize the business of payment function and improve the operation efficiency to improve the merchant's business. This enables them to serve more customers in more areas, so as to gain maximum value from trading."
Pousaz also pointed out that "Libra project is expected to increase financial inclusion of billions without bank accounts, to enable them to participate in the digital economy, and close the gap. In Libra association, we found a group of peers to share the idea, They have shown a thoughtful and realistic way to use blockchain for the greater good."
Pousaz said they have been fascinated by blockchain and its potential benefits for global transaction processing. But at the same time, "regulation should be part of any final framework because of its unique ability to protect ecosystems from systemic abuse". He pointed out that technological advances alone will not provide the large-scale use of a payment infrastructure that promotes security and stability, thus hindering its development.
Dante Disparte, director of policy and communications for the Libra association, welcomes Checkout.com to the association. "The organization (Checkout.com) joins the dynamic and growing group of Libra society members who are committed to achieving safe, transparent, and consumer-friendly global payment system implementations that break financial barriers for billions of people."
