CointelegtaphreportsThe FCC, the us regulator, is looking at changes in the management of wireless spectrum through blockchain technology.
The us regulator, the Federal Communications Commission, is considering the use of blockchain for wireless network licensing. Committee member Jessica Rosenworcel said in a speech at the MIT blockchain business conference last week that the technology could help simplify and reduce the cost of dealing with so-called wireless spectrum organizations.
Wireless devices need radio waves to communicate, and as the number of wireless devices increases and the Internet of things (IoT) expands, there may be a shortage of available frequencies.
"The FCC is responsible for determining which companies can use which frequencies and for granting patents through a complicated auction process that can be easily interfered with," Ms. Rosenworcel said. "there's a lot of software involved and verifying financial levels and technical data. We take bids, manage them and license them."
For several years, however, the FCC has been trying to upend the status quo, trying to support options such as sharing frequency between clients while sifting through and shutting down licenses for unused available capacity. "There are registries in all of these licenses, but on a day-to-day basis, the FCC doesn't really have a very clear idea of what is in use and what isn't," Rosenworcel said. "She added. "In the current situation, the market observation conclusions provided by tracking usage data are not perfect, and maybe blockchain can change that."
