BlockBeats news, November 6 — David Allen, head of long-short strategy at Plato Investment Management, said the root of Thursday's market sell-off lies in investors conflating AI's transformative potential with whether related investments can deliver returns. The Nasdaq 100 plunged as investors rushed to dump US tech stocks amid speculation that congressional Democrats will tighten regulation of the AI industry.
"There's been a survival-of-the-fittest race among the large hyperscalers. The midterm election results effectively provided the spark for a sharp market decline," Allen said. Vihari Ross, portfolio manager at Antipodes Partners, said the sell-off reflects less a structural problem among AI companies than the market beginning to reassess the real-world conditions for the next phase of related investment.
"Achieving the goals requires deploying massive amounts of debt — which means the cost of capital is critical, and the level of interest rates is critical; it also depends on whether sufficient power supply can be secured and whether market demand can hold at current levels," she said. "Assuming every company can achieve a perfect outcome is probably not a wise move."
