BlockBeats news, November 2 - According to a report by The Washington Post, SpaceX is in talks with EchoStar to acquire its wireless business Boost Mobile, or to obtain the right to use the network, in order to launch its own mobile communication service; the report cited informed sources as saying that the two sides have discussed launching a wireless service under the SpaceX brand through cooperation in recent months. Reuters, citing the report, said that Boost's existing network is mainly leased from AT&T and T-Mobile.
The report said that the move is intended to support Musk's Starlink Mobile plan, combining satellite constellations with terrestrial cellular networks to challenge the three major U.S. carriers. EchoStar had about 7.38 million wireless users at the end of the second quarter, mainly Boost Mobile and Gen Mobile customers; Musk also met with EchoStar Chairman Charlie Ergen last month. If the deal involves the transfer of a network leasing agreement, it may still require the consent of AT&T and T-Mobile.
