Bitunix Analyst: Fed Pauses But Divisions Widen — AI Investment and Energy Inflation Test Policy Room

BlockBeats news, October 29—The Federal Reserve voted 10-2 to hold the Fed funds rate at 3.75%–4.00%, but with two officials dissenting in favor of a 25 basis-point hike—showing that inflation risk is deepening policy divisions. The Fed noted that US economic activity remains strong, domestic spending shows resilience, and inflation remains elevated. A hold therefore does not mean the tightening cycle is over—the path ahead will still depend on how prices and financial conditions evolve.

The core of this policy debate is whether AI investment can genuinely withstand high rates. While mega-cap tech companies hold ample cash, data center operators and infrastructure suppliers still rely on external financing—meaning rising borrowing costs could gradually compress capex. If AI investment proves rate-sensitive, limited tightening could amplify the cooling effect. If investment stays strong, the Fed may be forced to depress housing, consumption, and corporate demand instead—paying a higher growth cost. Elevated energy prices further add to inflation stickiness, making the policy judgment even more complex.

The European Central Bank faces a similar tug between inflation and growth. Markets expect it to hold deposit rates at 2.5% this round, while still watching for another possible hike in December. As energy costs push up inflation risk, eurozone growth momentum is slowing, and rising French sovereign yields and risk premia could tighten the economy further through funding costs. Should bond-market pressure persist, even a central bank determined to maintain its anti-inflation stance will need to weigh the growth impact of financial fragmentation.

For markets, the key question is no longer just whether central banks hike this time—it is whether high rates can effectively suppress demand, and whether they might unexpectedly crush investment and credit. If energy inflation persists and AI financing costs rise in tandem, global financial conditions could tighten further. If growth cools before inflation, policymakers will face the risk of over-tightening. Ahead, inflation data, corporate financing conditions, and US-EU bond-yield spreads will all be important clues for reading the policy path.
