Japanese internet giant hit by cyberattack; hackers demand Bitcoin ransom, company executive refuses to pay

BlockBeats news, October 28 - According to Nada News, the cloud desktop service under Japan's internet giant GMO Group has suffered unauthorized access, potentially affecting up to 26,739 servers. In the ransom letter, hackers specifically demanded payment in BTC and ETH, claiming that GMO's crypto exchange could instantly prepare the funds, and threatened to continue abnormal transactions in victim accounts and publicly disclose user data. The ransom demand was initially $50 million, then reduced to $1 million.

GMO Group representative Masatoshi Kumagai explicitly stated refusal to compromise and confirmed no payment was made. Its crypto exchange GMO Coin also confirmed no abnormal operations were found in customer accounts. Although the hackers subsequently published some data and threatened daily updates, the website domain hosting the leaked information was shut down in the early morning of October 28.
