BlockBeats news, October 26: Ethereum Foundation researcher Toni Wahrstätter posted that due to a ChainSecurity report revealing compatibility and security issues between EIP-8037 and some smart contracts, core developers decided last week to postpone the Hoodi testnet upgrade to Glamsterdam. The issues identified so far include: during transaction execution, remaining Gas may increase, causing some Gas counting logic to underflow and trigger a revert, or causing code paths that should not be executed to be triggered, making transactions appear successful.
In addition, some contracts may underestimate usage because they cannot correctly calculate Gas consumption during calls. ChainSecurity previously stated that 13 real cases have been identified and that it is conducting responsible disclosure with the affected projects. Toni Wahrstätter said that this week further investigation of the relevant contracts will be conducted to evaluate follow-up solutions, which may require coordinated handling by application developers, core developers, auditors, and node operators, and in the worst case may require adjusting the protocol specification. He reminded application developers and auditors to check contract compatibility with EIP-8037 and EIP-8038 and to report issues promptly.
