Beating AI News Flash: Chroma, the company behind the open-source vector database ChromaDB, has announced that it has signed a formal agreement with Replit to join the company.
ChromaDB primarily helps AI retrieve relevant information from large volumes of documents, with approximately 6 million monthly downloads and nearly 30,000 GitHub stars.
What Replit values also includes Foundation, the enterprise-grade AI Agent memory system Chroma developed this year. It can read work records from Codex and Claude Code as well as Slack messages, extract problems teams have solved and experience accumulated through background Agents, and continuously update the enterprise knowledge base. Different Agents can share this knowledge without having to figure things out from scratch each time. Replit hopes to use this to build the context and memory infrastructure for enterprise-grade AI Agents.
The two sides actually have a history. They collaborated in 2023 to launch an AI application development template, and Replit CEO Amjad Masad and President Michele Catasta were also early investors in Chroma.
However, Chroma's existing cloud service will be shut down directly. Starting November 22, writes will stop and it will switch to read-only; on December 22, reads will stop. Existing customers need to complete data migration before then. Open-source ChromaDB will continue to use the Apache 2.0 license, and some previously closed-source code has also been opened up. Replit promises to continue contributing code to open-source projects.
