Data: Individual stock ETPs in South Korean stocks listed for two and a half months have caused retail investors to lose over KRW 6 trillion.

BlockBeats news, October 21, according to Yonhap News Agency, about two and a half months after single-stock exchange-traded products (ETPs, including ETNs) were listed, individual investors have accumulated losses exceeding KRW 6 trillion. Investors in their 40s had the highest total losses, while those aged 70 and above had the highest average loss per account.

According to data submitted by the Financial Supervisory Service to National Assembly member Park Sung-hoon, from May 27 to August 14, 2026, accounts that traded single-stock ETPs at least once across 10 securities firms recorded total losses of KRW 6.313 trillion, including KRW 2.3242 trillion in realized losses and KRW 3.9888 trillion in unrealized valuation losses on holdings.

Investors in their 40s lost KRW 2.053 trillion across about 165,200 accounts; those in their 50s and 30s lost KRW 1.8655 trillion and KRW 1.0912 trillion, respectively. The group aged 70 and above, with about 9,800 accounts, had an average loss of KRW 29.94 million per account, 2.6 times the overall average loss per account; those in their 60s had an average loss of about KRW 13.21 million per account.

From late July to August 14, realized losses increased by KRW 360.4 billion, unrealized valuation losses decreased by KRW 50.7 billion, and total losses widened by KRW 309.7 billion. The report noted that this may be related to investors selling loss-making products, but stock price fluctuations and new trades can also affect the statistics; the Financial Supervisory Service data alone cannot confirm the reasons for selling or whether forced liquidations occurred.
