BlockBeats news, October 14 — The world's largest custodian bank, Bank of New York Mellon (BNY), and trading giant Citadel Securities announced on Tuesday that they have completed a tokenized U.S. Treasury transaction, aimed at demonstrating how blockchain technology can accelerate the transfer of assets from trade settlement into financing, improving collateral circulation efficiency.
U.S. Treasuries are important collateral for banks and trading institutions to obtain short-term loans and finance trading activities, but under the traditional settlement system, bonds take time to transfer between different accounts and systems, potentially causing funds and assets to be temporarily tied up. This transaction connects settlement and financing through tokenized Treasuries, potentially allowing institutions to reuse collateral more quickly and free up liquidity.
BNY said it plans to further launch digital cash and tokenized deposit services to support blockchain-based settlement and financing; it also plans in 2027 to extend the operating hours of the traditional settlement system for Fed-eligible securities and U.S. tri-party repo transactions to cover European and Asian trading sessions.
As institutions including BlackRock, Franklin Templeton, and JPMorgan continue to explore asset tokenization, traditional financial institutions are trying to use blockchain to shorten settlement times, automate business processes, and improve asset liquidity.
