Trump Announces Russia-Ukraine 'Energy Ceasefire,' Says It Takes Effect Immediately; Russia Has Not Confirmed, Zelensky Says Still Waiting for Details

BlockBeats news, October 12: U.S. President Trump suddenly announced on Truth Social on Sunday local time that Russia and Ukraine have reached an energy ceasefire agreement, saying it is "effective immediately, both sides have agreed, do not break it." However, he did not disclose specific terms, and Russia has not confirmed its agreement. Ukrainian President Zelensky initially responded that he was unaware of this, saying "the energy ceasefire is also news to me," and stated that Kyiv is still waiting for details from the U.S. side. He subsequently said that Ukraine supports the ceasefire, hopes the arrangement will truly be implemented, and said the Ukrainian armed forces have received relevant orders; but Zelensky also pointed out that on that day Ukraine's skies were still filled with Russian "Shahed" drones, and Russian forces also launched glide bomb attacks and struck energy facilities, with a combined heat and power plant in Kharkiv attacked after Trump announced the ceasefire. This is not the first time Trump has announced a similar arrangement. On September 14, he announced that Russia and Ukraine had reached an energy ceasefire, but both sides continued attacks afterward.

According to European officials, the U.S. side has recently pressured Kyiv and European countries, with threats that may include cutting off intelligence sharing and stopping weapons purchases through the PURL mechanism. At the same time, Trump announced last Friday that he had reached a diesel supply arrangement with Putin, saying Russia would immediately supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel to the United States and global markets. This move was opposed in a joint statement by senators from both parties, who said it may violate the 2022 law banning Russian energy imports. Energy experts questioned the actual effect of the arrangement, believing that Putin has not made substantive concessions. Zelensky proposed that as long as Putin agrees to a 60-day full ceasefire, he will call for elections; currently, the energy ceasefire announced by Trump still lacks explicit confirmation from the Russian side, and the White House has not said whether Trump will accept the conditions proposed by Zelensky.
