Devin starts "dreaming" every day: automatically organizing long-term memory, solution already open-sourced.

动察 Beating AI News: AI coding company Cognition has launched Memory and Dreaming for Devin. Memory is responsible for enabling Devin to remember user preferences, corrections, and project experience across sessions; Dreaming reorganizes these memories in the background every day. Users can directly view what Devin remembers and also see what changes Dreaming has recently made.

These memories are stored in a personal Memory Drive, which is essentially a persistent Git repository, with content mainly organized as Markdown files. Among them, a brief MEMORY.md serves as the entry point and index and is placed into context at the start of each new session. Devin then searches relevant memory files based on the current task, similar to searching a codebase, without needing to stuff the entire memory repository into the prompt.

Multiple Devin sessions can read and write the same set of memories at the same time. Each session has its own Git checkout, and after modifying memories, it commits and merges them back into the Memory Drive. When concurrent modifications occur, Git exposes conflicts, preventing different sessions from overwriting each other.

Dreaming itself is a background session that runs automatically every day. It re-examines past conversations and existing memories, merges duplicate content, deletes temporary information or information that has not been used for a long time, and also fills in experiences that were not previously recorded.

Cognition has also made this solution into an independent Agent Memory Repo and open-sourced it. Other Agents such as Claude Code and Cursor can also use a similar approach to store long-term memory as files and manage it through Git. However, the open-source version provides this memory structure and workflow; automatically running Dreaming every day like Devin still requires additional configuration.
