US bipartisan senators plan to push AI liability legislation, requiring companies to be held accountable for agent intrusion behavior.

BlockBeats news, October 1 — U.S. Republican Senator Josh Hawley and Democratic Senator Chris Murphy plan to introduce artificial intelligence liability legislation. Although Trump has made his administration's position very clear (that the industry should self-regulate), a growing number of Republicans insist that new laws are needed.

According to Axios, the AI Accountability Act will seek to hold companies criminally and civilly liable for hacking incidents. These lawmakers believe that current law leaves too much uncertainty about who should be held responsible when AI agents breach systems. This approach stands in sharp contrast to government officials. Government officials say existing laws can address harms caused by AI.

U.S. Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton said on Wednesday: "As the president has pointed out, we have consumer protection laws. We have product liability laws." Clayton said: "We have the Department of Justice. We have an architecture for dealing with developments in every vertical area, including transportation, energy, financial services, and so on." Trump considers Clayton a good candidate to be the AI affairs chief.
