US-Iran talks yield no practical results, Middle East smart money predicts Iran will charge strait transit fees

According to PolyBeats monitoring, on September 22, Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi made contact with a U.S. special envoy during the UN General Assembly, with Qatari representatives mediating between the two sides. The discussion lasted about 3 hours. Trump called the talks "very productive" and said further talks could continue soon.

On the prediction market Polymarket, denizz bought $5.64k "Yes" on "Will Iran begin charging tolls for the Strait of Hormuz before November?" at a purchase probability of 38.92%. The current "Yes" probability is 18%.

denizz trades at 90%+ as a late-stage trade. Their open trades in the geopolitical sector total 199, with an 80% win rate, PnL +$472.0k, and this bet is 1.53 times their median bet size.

Iran confirmed the contact, but stressed that it was conveying conditions through Qatar, not abandoning its original position. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Baghaei said Iran demands an end to the war and the U.S. maritime blockade, a halt to military and economic pressure, and the release of frozen assets. Iran subsequently denied that it had withdrawn its preconditions for reopening the strait.

On September 23, Pezeshkian spoke at the UN General Assembly, saying Iran is willing to dialogue but cannot negotiate under the threat of force. At the same time, he still linked Strait of Hormuz transit to Iran's security and sovereignty. The U.S. side sent signals that "the talks went well and can continue," while Iran emphasized that its preconditions have not changed. The public positions of both sides have not yet shown substantive concessions.
