Ethereum and Base fail to reach consensus on account abstraction standard, will advance their own respective solutions.

BlockBeats news, September 15: Ethlabs developer Derek Chiang stated that the account abstraction collaboration around EIP-8130 and EIP-8141 (frame transactions) ended last week, and Ethereum and Base will each advance different standards. The two sides had originally planned to establish a unified solution applicable to both L1 and L2, in order to provide a consistent cross-chain experience for gasless transactions, passkey wallets, and future quantum-resistant accounts.


Chiang pointed out that Ethereum L1 places greater emphasis on censorship resistance, privacy, security, and quantum resistance, and needs transaction types that support signature aggregation, privacy protocols, and freely programmable accounts, thus giving rise to solutions such as ERC-4337, EIP-7701, and EIP-8141. Base and other L2s, by contrast, focus on scalability, customization, and compliance, and want the protocol to be able to identify and restrict specific accounts and transaction types, hence standards such as EIP-8130.


Although the two sides found multiple technical solutions, all of them required at least one side to compromise on core objectives. In the end, they each went their own way and shifted the responsibility for compatibility with different standards to wallet and application developers. Chiang believes that going forward, an EVM coordination mechanism covering more L1 and L2 participants could be established, or standard fragmentation could be accepted and the underlying differences hidden through the wallet and application layers; he currently favors the latter path.
