BlockBeats news, September 15: Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev stated that the company plans to add physical redemption and voting rights for stock tokens. Johann Kerbrat, head of Robinhood's crypto business, further said that the company is developing a 1:1 exchange function between tokens and underlying stocks and plans to provide voting rights to eligible stock token holders, but has not yet announced a specific launch date.
This plan was announced after AMC CEO Adam Aron demanded that Robinhood stop issuing AMC stock tokens. Aron believes that such tokens are not approved by the issuing company and that holders do not possess the relevant rights enjoyed by traditional shareholders.
Robinhood stock tokens are currently issued to users outside the United States through a subsidiary registered in Jersey and are designed as debt instruments. Although Robinhood claims that the relevant tokens are backed 1:1 by real shares held in custody, holders currently only receive price exposure to the underlying stock and do not own the stock or its beneficial rights. The company may use its shareholder engagement platform Say to provide voting infrastructure.
