AI Safety Alert Escalates: King Charles III Convenes Meeting with Four Major AI Giants

Beating AI News Flash: King Charles III of the United Kingdom will convene executives from multiple AI companies this week at Dumfries House in Scotland to discuss how AI should be developed and deployed to truly benefit society.

The companies listed by Buckingham Palace include Nvidia, Google DeepMind, OpenAI, and Anthropic, and UK AI Minister Kanishka Narayan will also attend. OpenAI has confirmed that CFO Sarah Friar will be present.

This meeting was not hastily added because of the recent calls for an "AI slowdown"; the relevant arrangements were already revealed a week ago. But its official debut now coincides with one of the most intense rounds of controversy over AI safety. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has just called for slowing the improvement of frontier AI capabilities, fearing that once AI begins helping develop the next generation of AI, progress will outpace humanity's ability to understand and control it. Sam Altman and Elon Musk subsequently both publicly supported this.

The meeting is being organized with assistance from the UK nonprofit Ditchley Foundation. Royal officials previously made clear that Charles will not take a position on AI policy; his role is to convene, listen, and promote discussion.
