US House Speaker: Congress will not take the lead in slamming the brakes on AI

Beating AI News Flash: U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson stated that Congress will not take the lead in slamming the brakes on AI. He believes that if companies like OpenAI and Anthropic truly feel that continuing research and development is too dangerous, they are fully capable of stopping on their own first, without needing to wait for a government order. Congress, at present, should even less hastily impose an emergency moratorium.

Johnson acknowledged that AI needs safety guardrails, and is willing to recall lawmakers to vote when a mature plan is available. But he also emphasized that the United States cannot allow itself to be constrained by regulation. He would rather have Trump, Congress, and several leading AI companies sit down first and negotiate the rules clearly.
