August Crypto Exchange Rankings: Spot Trading Volume Surges Over 18% Month-on-Month, Stock Activity Drives Trading Recovery

BlockBeats news, September 10 — In August 2026, trading activity in the cryptocurrency market showed a clear recovery.

Key data points are as follows:

Spot-led growth: Spot trading volume on major CEXs rose 18.64% month-over-month, while perpetual contract trading volume increased 10.89% month-over-month. The notably higher spot growth compared with contracts indicates that the market recovery was primarily driven by spot buying.

Divergence between traffic and trading: In August, website page views on major CEXs edged down 0.26%, and APP downloads fell 5.61%. With new traffic growth slowing, trading volume rose against the trend, suggesting that this round of growth mainly came from higher trading frequency and improved conversion efficiency among existing users.

Perp DEXs rebounded in tandem: Trading volume on major perpetual contract DEXs rose 8.98% month-over-month in August, while web traffic remained broadly stable.

CEX Rankings and Performance

Top by trading volume: Binance firmly held the industry's No. 1 spot with $233 billion in spot volume and $1.606 trillion in contract volume. OKX (spot $46 billion / contracts $634 billion) and Bybit (spot $46 billion / contracts $365 billion) ranked second and third, respectively.

Ranking changes: Coinbase rose 2 places to No. 7 in spot rankings; Kraken rose 1 place to No. 9.

User traffic rankings: Binance (2.532 million downloads, 34.19 million web visits) and OKX (550,000 downloads, 25.62 million web visits) continued to hold the top two positions.

Hyperliquid led the decentralized perpetual contract market with $207 billion in contract trading volume.
