Swedish Tax Agency Seeks Approximately $56.5 Million in Back Taxes from Six Crypto Mining Firms

BlockBeats News, September 8 - The Swedish Tax Agency has demanded approximately SEK 540 million (around $56.5 million) in taxes and fines from six cryptocurrency mining companies located in Boden, a town in northern Sweden. The investigation revealed that these companies allegedly used complex corporate structures to conceal their actual crypto mining operations, thereby securing tax benefits originally intended for ordinary data processing centers.

Patrik Lillqvist, head of the intelligence unit at the Swedish Tax Agency, stated that the companies involved hid their mining activities through special arrangements in order to obtain tax advantages they were not entitled to. This action stems from an industry audit conducted by the Swedish Tax Agency from 2024 to 2026, during which a total of nine crypto companies nationwide were ordered to pay over $50 million in unpaid taxes and fines, with the six companies in Boden accounting for the vast majority. Some of the companies involved have filed appeals, but both the Swedish Administrative Court and the Court of Appeal have previously upheld the tax authority's findings. Among them, Bikupan Datacenter has entered financial restructuring proceedings due to its inability to meet its tax obligations and is currently appealing the case to the Supreme Administrative Court of Sweden.
