Tesla quietly launches Cybercab, with only 45 registered in Texas, far behind Waymo

BlockBeats News, September 4th. On September 3rd, Tesla held a private event in Austin, Texas, USA, officially launching the Cybercab designed for autonomous driving. However, the event was not live-streamed, and the overall scale was relatively low-key. Tesla has currently registered 45 Cybercabs in Texas, but it is unclear how many of them will be immediately put into commercial operation.

The Cybercab is a two-seater electric self-driving vehicle that does not have a steering wheel, pedals, or side mirrors. It mainly relies on 8 cameras and an AI system for autonomous driving. Tesla currently has a total of 420 autonomous vehicles in Texas, while Waymo has registered 988 in the state. According to the Robotaxi Tracker, Tesla currently operates around 256 driverless vehicles without safety drivers in 6 cities, while Waymo operates approximately 4000 vehicles in 14 cities.

The consumer sales launch date for the Cybercab has not been announced yet. Tesla has opened registration for fleet purchases and related infrastructure partnerships. This unveiling is seen as a key step for Musk in transforming Tesla from an electric vehicle manufacturer to an autonomous driving and robotics company. However, the company's expansion speed, regulatory approvals, and actual operational capabilities still face significant challenges.
