Ripple's Early Preparation for Quantum Resistance Upgrade: XRP Ledger Initiates "Four-Phase" Migration Plan to Mitigate "Q-Day" Threat

BlockBeats News, August 29th, Ripple is proactively deploying post-quantum computing capabilities for the XRP Ledger (XRPL) to address the risk of future quantum computers potentially breaking existing blockchain cryptography and stealing digital asset private keys. Ayo Akinyele, Senior Director of Engineering at Ripple, stated that the goal is not to wait until quantum computing becomes an imminent threat, but to ensure that key financial infrastructure can be upgraded before the threat arrives.

Ripple has developed a four-phase plan for XRPL, including assessing potential network vulnerabilities, testing post-quantum cryptographic algorithms, running existing and post-quantum secure mechanisms in parallel, and ultimately driving the network to complete the migration. If the development of quantum computing progresses faster than expected, an emergency response plan will also be initiated. XRPL currently supports replacing the key of the control account without changing the account, which is expected to reduce the difficulty of future migrations. However, large-scale protocol upgrades still require coordination among network validators.

Meanwhile, AI is accelerating cryptographic research. Reports indicate that last month, an Anthropic model reduced the work required to break a mainstream post-quantum signature candidate by about 67 million times, further highlighting the necessity of early upgrades to financial infrastructure. Bitcoin and Ethereum developers have also released their respective post-quantum migration plans this week.

Ripple believes that although AI and quantum computing are different technologies, both are driving financial infrastructure towards stronger security, more flexible upgrade mechanisms, and a 24/7 automated payment system evolution.
