Insightful Beating AI News: NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang responded to critics questioning the company's expansion of AI ecosystem funding on the "Mad Money" show, stating that critics overlook the unique capital needs of the AI industry. He mentioned that these are the first ventures that require billions of dollars to start and hundreds of billions to become profitable, as AI development and deployment itself require substantial funding.
NVIDIA has already invested in model developers like OpenAI and Anthropic, as well as new cloud service providers renting NVIDIA's computing power, and has provided funding for data center projects. The company supported a large computing power park leased by OpenAI in Ohio with $10.5 billion and is collaborating with major Wall Street financial institutions to arrange up to $50 billion in financing for data centers.
Some critics see these arrangements as "circular financing," where the company provides funds to customers who then use some of that funding to purchase its products, potentially artificially boosting demand and revenue. Huang described these cutting-edge AI labs as a "once-in-a-lifetime" investment opportunity, with NVIDIA aiming to be their equity investor, partner, and support them in building and expanding their presence on the NVIDIA platform.
Huang also pointed out that these companies typically lack investment-grade credit and the financial records needed to obtain low-cost funding, which NVIDIA can help provide. Even if individual supported companies face operational difficulties, the related computing infrastructure can be transferred to other customers and workloads, keeping NVIDIA's risk low. He stated that the investments are expected to yield significant returns.
