Ethereum Researchers Propose Quantum-Resistant Staking Scheme, Plan to Redesign Validator Deposit Contract

BlockBeats News, August 26th: Ethereum researchers have proposed an early draft to refactor the validator deposit contract to support various key lengths and multiple cryptographic signature schemes, preparing for future adoption of quantum-resistant signatures. The existing contract hardcodes the BLS key size, so even if developers identify a new post-quantum solution, the network cannot directly accept it at the moment.


The draft will label the cryptographic system used for each deposit, with the BLS label as 0 and the remaining labels reserved for future schemes. If the proposal is approved, the new signature scheme can be introduced alongside BLS; Ethereum can then later make another decision to permanently stop accepting new BLS deposits, but validators who have used BLS keys for staking will not immediately exit. The draft is currently using a temporary number, with maintainers suggesting it be numbered as EIP-8394.


As of Wednesday, Ethereum has around 42.4 million ETH staked, worth about $104 billion, all protected by BLS validator keys. Google Quantum AI in March this year listed five potential quantum attack paths against Ethereum, involving wallets, staking, smart contracts, Layer 2, and other assets totaling over $100 billion. The Ethereum Foundation currently plans to complete core protocol-level adjustments by around 2029.
