Zondacrypto Collapse Mystery: Founder Disappeared 4 Years Ago, Successor CEO Also Missing

BlockBeats News, August 24th. According to The New York Times report on August 23rd, the Polish cryptocurrency exchange Zondacrypto has plunged into a severe crisis. Its founder, Sylwester Suszek, has been missing since 2022, and the current CEO who took over from him, lawyer Przemyslaw Kral, has also been missing since April this year and has not appeared in public for four consecutive months.

Zondacrypto, formerly known as BitBay, was founded in Poland in 2014, later relocated to Estonia, and once claimed to have about 1.3 million customers and assets worth hundreds of millions of dollars. In April of this year, the Zondacrypto website was abruptly shut down, leaving hundreds of thousands of customers unable to withdraw or trade. The price of its ZND token has plummeted by over 99.9%. On June 29th, the Estonian financial intelligence unit revoked its parent company's operating license.

Prior to his disappearance, Kral had informed customers that Zondacrypto held about 4,500 BTC, worth over $330 million, but these assets would take time to unlock as only the missing former CEO Suszek held the relevant private keys. Industry insiders have questioned this claim, stating that the wallets Kral referred to have been inactive for nearly a decade.

Suszek went missing in 2022 at a gas station in southern Poland. Before his disappearance, he had sent voice messages and texts to his sister, claiming he had been kidnapped and demanding a BTC ransom. The Polish prosecutor subsequently charged his business partner Marian Wszolek with organized crime, VAT fraud, money laundering, and illegal deprivation of Suszek's liberty. Wszolek also went missing afterward. Suszek has not been found to date.

Reports indicate that Zondacrypto has sponsored several football clubs in Poland, Italy, and Estonia, as well as the Polish Olympic Committee in recent years. However, auditors had previously questioned the authenticity of its assets. Customers have been reporting withdrawal delays since December last year, and in April this year, the platform eventually froze all withdrawals.

The Katowice prosecutor's office in Poland is currently investigating the establishment and operation of Zondacrypto. The Polish political sphere and media are also looking into whether the exchange collapsed due to risks in the crypto market or was suspected of being used for money laundering and other criminal activities from the beginning.
