China's AI Computing Power Overwhelms the Great Grassland: Ulanqab Plans 12.5GW, Surpassing OpenAI's Interstellar Gateway

Dynamic Beating AI News Flash: China's AI computing power is surging towards Ulanqab, a prefecture-level city in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

According to Goldman Sachs data, the total committed data center capacity in operation, under construction, and planned in the area is about 12.5GW, exceeding OpenAI's initial 10GW target for Stargate. However, only about 1.2GW is currently operational.

This expansion has mainly taken place in the past year. Over 70% of Ulanqab's committed capacity is new in the last year. DeepSeek plans to self-build a 1GW data center, Xiaohongshu (RED) is reportedly considering a 600MW project, and companies like ByteDance and Alibaba have also entered the scene.

The area offers cheap land, inexpensive electricity, cold weather, and proximity to Beijing. Dedicated fiber optics have reduced the average latency from Ulanqab to Beijing to within 5 milliseconds.
