Insightful Beating AI News: The Codex community has recently seen a surge in reports of sudden depletion of weekly usage limits. A Pro 5x user saw their 7-day limit drop from $674.05 to $156.95 after conversion at API rates, a decrease of 76.7%. However, when testing another Plus account, the decrease was only 19.2%. Another Plus user observed their limit drop from around $160 to $80.
There are also posts on GitHub detailing the complete local logs of OpenAI Codex. During the same week, the limit was depleted at approximately 2.4 times the usual rate on August 14, only to return to normal a few hours later, with no changes in subscription tier or limit resets during that period.
The difference in depletion rates across accounts is significant, with conflicting information from third-party trackers, and the possibility of some accounts experiencing bugs cannot be ruled out. A similar anomaly occurred in June, where OpenAI eventually discovered that the Codex backend was running workloads beyond expectations, leading to incorrect usage displays. Affected users had their limits reset after the issue was fixed.
It is currently unclear whether this round of depletions is a uniform adjustment, a metering anomaly affecting specific accounts, or a change in model consumption.
