BlockBeats News, August 19th. Recently, about 40 top mathematicians from around the world gathered at the OpenAI office in San Francisco to discuss a controversial issue: as artificial intelligence surpasses humans in the field of mathematics, what role will mathematicians play in the future.
University of Toronto professor Daniel Litt proposed an extreme scenario at the meeting, suggesting a potential future where "high-quality mathematical research disappears, and human mathematical expertise gradually diminishes." While acknowledging that this outcome is not the most likely, he emphasized that the mathematics community must quickly adapt to the changes brought about by AI.
Mathematics is considered one of the earliest disciplines to be impacted by AI research capabilities. Recently, OpenAI announced 10 mathematical and computer science achievements generated or assisted by AI, covering several research areas that typically take years to master.
OpenAI mathematician and Fields Medal recipient Jacob Tsimerman stated that AI may soon reach a level of "stable superhuman performance" in mathematical research. He recently announced his decision to join OpenAI to work on AI safety.
In recent years, AI has begun to produce some groundbreaking mathematical results. In May of this year, an, as yet unreleased, OpenAI model proposed a counterexample to the "unit distance conjecture," a result that some mathematicians believe has reached a publishable level. Meanwhile, researchers at Anthropic have also used Claude to assist in research on high-dimensional mathematical problems.
However, there is still a division in the mathematics community regarding AI replacing human researchers. Some experts believe that AI can generate proofs but may not necessarily truly understand mathematical concepts. Harvard University mathematician Melanie Matchett Wood pointed out that current top AI models still struggle to accurately explain key difficulties in proofs.
Northwestern University mathematics professor Bryna Kra stated that mathematics is not just about finding answers but more importantly about understanding the results. "A proof that is not understood will not truly become part of the mathematical literature."
At the same time, some researchers believe that AI may become a tool for mathematicians rather than a replacement. OpenAI research scientist Sébastien Bubeck suggested that in the future, mathematics may resemble software engineering, with AI assisting a large number of researchers in collaborating to solve complex problems, or it may resemble physics, pushing for larger-scale scientific exploration through AI models.
As AI continues to make breakthroughs in the field of research, mathematicians are facing a new existential question: will future mathematical research be a joint creation of humans and AI, or will it gradually move towards machine dominance.
