According to Dynamics Beating monitoring, GPT-5.6 Sol suddenly had a 50% discount on both OpenRouter and Vercel AI Gateway. The standard API price, which was $5 per million token input and $30 per output, dropped to $2.5 and $15, and the promotion will last until September 18.
However, OpenAI's own API official price did not budge, remaining at $5 and $30. The discounts on both sides only apply to OpenAI requests paid for by the platform, and those using their OpenAI Key do not enjoy the 50% discount. Therefore, this seems more like a channel-limited time promotion rather than an official price reduction for GPT-5.6 Sol.
SemiAnalysis suspects there is another layer of marketing calculation here. Both OpenRouter and Vercel will publicly disclose the model's token usage and market share, which is an important source of data for observing the adoption rate of various AI models externally. If the 50% discount doubles the Sol usage in the short term, OpenAI's share in these public rankings will also rise rapidly. Many investors may naively see this as a huge victory for OpenAI over Anthropic.
However, currently, there is no evidence to prove that OpenAI is engaging in "ranking manipulation."
