BlockBeats News, August 15th - A recent report from the Oxford Economic Research Institute has shown that global trade heavily relies on 27 key maritime "chokepoints," where a significant disruption at any node could impact energy, commodity shipping, and the global economy.
The report highlights that the ongoing six-month US-Iran conflict has disrupted shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. This strait is a core global energy transit route, with approximately one-fifth of the world's oil supply passing through it. As commercial vessels face increased attack risks, shipping delays have driven international oil prices up, with US gasoline prices surpassing $4 per gallon, further exacerbating inflationary pressures.
In addition to the Strait of Hormuz, global trade is also highly concentrated at key points such as the Malacca Strait, Taiwan Strait, Suez Canal, Strait of Gibraltar, and Panama Canal. Asia, in particular, possesses the world's most dense trade route network, with the Malacca Strait linking the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, serving as a vital conduit for global energy and commodity transport; the Taiwan Strait carries about a quarter of global trade volume.
The report warns that geopolitical conflicts represent one of the most significant risks to global trade. Some countries may use key passages as tools for political maneuvering, while climate change is also increasing shipping risks. For instance, the Panama Canal has experienced decreased water levels due to drought and El Niño, restricting vessel cargo capacity and raising transportation costs.
The Oxford Economic Research Institute stated that the risk level of different "chokepoints" depends on the existence of alternative routes. The risk is particularly acute in the Strait of Hormuz due to a lack of effective alternative pathways, while some routes, although circumventable, would incur higher fuel, labor, and operational costs due to longer shipping distances, thereby driving up global freight rates.
With rising geopolitical tensions, extreme weather events, and supply chain vulnerabilities, the global trade system's reliance on critical maritime nodes is emerging as a new economic risk factor.
