FBI Agent Arrested for Allegedly Stealing Around $1 Million in Cryptocurrency

BlockBeats News, August 4th, an FBI agent in the United States was arrested last Friday for allegedly stealing about $1 million in cryptocurrency from a "hostile crypto account." An affidavit shows that Patrick Yaroch began transferring funds from the account in late 2024 or early 2025 and conducted approximately 12 transactions after discovering the key to control the associated digital wallet.

Yaroch, a former Senior Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Headquarters' Counterintelligence and Espionage Section, who previously worked in the Boston field office, was terminated on July 31st. He told investigators that he had commingled personal funds with the proceeds from the cryptocurrency scheme and admitted to making "some very poor decisions regarding his crypto wallet."

The FBI stated that Yaroch had consulted with ChatGPT on how to dispose of or invest $1 million and relocate to a European country. Based on his preferences for family circumstances, purchasing a 5 to 10-acre estate, and collecting vintage wines, ChatGPT listed Portugal as the top choice. The affidavit also revealed that Yaroch had purchased a ticket to Portugal for September 3rd and a return ticket.

Court documents indicated that Yaroch has been charged with interstate transportation of stolen goods and receiving stolen property, securities, and funds.
