OpenAI has unveiled its internal model Astra for the first time, with a projected 21% chance of a public release in August.

According to PolyBeats monitoring, in the prediction market Polymarket, the probability that OpenAI's Astra model will be released before August 31, 2026, is currently 21%.

On August 1, OpenAI first mentioned Astra, calling its in-house version the company's "next major model." OpenAI stated that the model has achieved 10 mathematical and theoretical computer science milestones in areas such as high-dimensional geometry, coding theory, quantum complexity, and lattice cryptography. On August 2, Axios also reported that Sam Altman recently briefed Washington policy makers on Astra's capabilities.

It is worth noting that the market rules require Astra (either by OpenAI or by trusted media confirmed to be a renamed version of Astra) to be actually open to the general public before 11:59 PM ET on August 31. Public testing and open waitlists are acceptable; however, internal usage, closed-door testing, demos to policy makers, or limited partner access do not meet the criteria.

As of now, OpenAI's August 1 announcement did not provide a release date for Astra, a waitlist, or an API access plan. While the company's previous generation GPT-5.6 was publicly launched on July 9, it also underwent phased testing and restricted access prior to that.
