Those praising it have dubbed it a "monster," believing it has reached the level of top-tier proprietary models. The most acclaimed capabilities currently are user interface generation, code architecture, and in-depth research. Some also feel that it has not yet surpassed the Fable 5 but has come very close.
The biggest regret is its size. A Reddit user likened it to a "F1 race car displayed in a storefront": indeed powerful in performance, but unaffordable for the average person. Some developers have already connected 80 RTX 5090s into a cluster to run the full Kimi K3. While it does not use expensive data center GPUs like the H100 or H200, the entire setup is still not within the reach of an ordinary individual gamer.
The K3 has also been criticized for being too Token-intensive. Some users report that it has long processing times and quickly depletes resources when performing complex tasks. Some have used up their weekly quota in just a day and a half, prompting calls for rankings to consider not only the scores but also how many Tokens are required to complete the same task.
The community is also debating whether it can be considered truly open source. Critics argue that the K3 has not publicly released training data, and the license has restrictions, so a more accurate description would be open-weight rather than open-source. Supporters are less concerned about the semantics: being able to download, modify, and self-deploy is already a significant increase in freedom compared to just calling a closed-source API.
