US Agency: Number of Cybersecurity Vulnerabilities Discovered by AI This Year Will Be Double That of Last Year

BlockBeats News, July 28, 2026 - The number of software security vulnerabilities discovered in popular tech products in 2026 is expected to reach about twice the number discovered in 2025, with this surge mainly attributed to the continuous improvement of artificial intelligence capabilities.

The U.S. National Vulnerability Database shows that from January to this Monday, a total of 45,207 vulnerabilities have been recorded, a number that is close to the total for the entire year of 2025. Last year, the database recorded a record high number of vulnerabilities.

Oracle (ORCL.N) stated that its July monthly software update fixed 1,449 security vulnerabilities, setting a record high; while the updates in the same period last year only included 309 fixes.

Microsoft (MSFT.O) disclosed 642 security vulnerabilities in July, also reaching a record high, nearly five times the number from the same period last year. Google (GOOG.O) discovered and fixed 433 such vulnerabilities in a recent Chrome browser update, compared to only 11 in a similar update a year ago.

Gabriel Shapiro, a prominent artificial intelligence research scientist at cybersecurity company SentinelOne, stated: "We must face the fact that these tools are enhancing people's ability to discover software vulnerabilities." Google Chrome Engineering Director Doug Turner mentioned that vulnerabilities are being discovered at an "unprecedented scale and speed," thanks to advancements in artificial intelligence models and the corresponding investments.
