On July 21, American billionaire Mark Cuban, while participating in the All-In Podcast, stated that tech giants such as Google and Meta are investing their cash flows into AI infrastructure while taking on debt of hundreds of billions of dollars to build data centers. This move is equivalent to betting on continued growth in future demand, with the belief that the technology roadmap will not undergo significant changes.
However, he cautioned that there could still be a significant breakthrough in AI efficiency, leading to a substantial decrease in computing power and electricity requirements. Similar to the fiber optics industry in the past, which rapidly shifted from undersupply to massive oversupply capacity, the data centers being expensively constructed today might face significant depreciation in the future due to excess capacity. In his view, while AI demand is indeed expected to grow, betting with decades-long debt on the market 10 or 20 years down the line still poses a very high risk.
