President Trump Announces 100% Tariff on Generic Drugs Two Years Later

After the two-year period, the related products will face a 100% tariff for one year; subsequently, the tariff will be further increased to 200%.

Trump stated that the purpose of implementing this policy is to encourage the reshoring of generic drug production to the U.S. Companies that fail to establish production factories and related equipment in the U.S. within the specified period will face tariff penalties. The current policy regarding patented drugs, brand-name drugs, and innovative drugs will remain unchanged due to its effective implementation.

The White House of the United States announced on April 2 that President Trump signed a document on the same day, invoking Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, imposing a 100% tariff on imported patented drugs and pharmaceutical ingredients. This measure simultaneously provides a path for exemptions or tariff reductions, aiming to compel pharmaceutical companies to reach agreements with the White House on drug prices and industry reshoring.
