Michael Saylor Speaks Out Against Bitcoin BIP-110: Argues That It Essentially Aims to Enforce "Coin Purity" Through Legal Means, Contrary to the Core Tenet of Decentralization

BlockBeats News, July 21st - Strategy founder Michael Saylor stated that attempting to modify Bitcoin's rules solely because one disagrees with how others use Bitcoin is a form of statism, running counter to the principles of freedom, property rights, free markets, and the Austrian School of Economics upheld by the Bitcoin community. BIP-110 fundamentally seeks to enforce "monetary purity" through statutory means, which does not align with the core tenet of Bitcoin decentralization.

Earlier on the 19th, Michael Saylor opposed BIP-110, claiming that the governance risks associated with it outweigh the issues it attempts to address. He believes that the proposal seeks to restrict the current valid use of transactions that are still willing to pay fees through consensus rules, potentially escalating disputes over data storage and other use cases to the protocol layer.

BIP-110 plans to add 7 new consensus restrictions within a roughly one-year period, including limitations on new script pubkey lengths, certain push data and witness item sizes, and disabling some Taproot extension paths. Additionally, 110 reasons against BIP-110 are listed. He opposes the proposal's adoption of a 55% miner signaling threshold, stating that it is significantly lower than the 95% standard of BIP-9, and the removal of regular timeouts and the FAILED status could lead to coordination errors, chain splits, and market uncertainty.

Saylor believes that block space costs, node relay policies, miner strategies, pruning, and Layer 2 tools can address these issues without altering the consensus. He emphasizes that even if the rules are only temporarily effective, the governance precedent established may persist long-term, hence stating that the "proposed governance solution is more dangerous than the problem itself."
