According to TrendForce's Monitor, Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Oracle are pouring a significant amount of cash into AI data centers. This money is ultimately flowing to chipmakers such as NVIDIA, Broadcom, and Micron. Bank of America has referred to this as a "generational free cash flow shift."
While chipmakers' cash flows continue to rise, the tech giants are seeing a rapid decline. Amazon is projected to have a negative $12 billion free cash flow this year, yet it still holds over $100 billion in cash reserves.
The risk is that the tech giants may start to scale back their AI investments. It would make sense for any single company to spend less, but if there is a collective pullback, both the chip market and the data center boom could quickly cool off.
