Kimi Drives a Wedge in the US AI Community: Tech Titans Flock to Open Source, Security Advocates Rush to Contain

According to Dynasty Beating monitoring, China's open-source AI strategy is achieving a result more significant than catching up with models: America's own tech giants and officials are beginning to lean towards the Chinese route, in turn questioning their country's closed-source behemoths.

David Sacks stated that some have shifted a significant amount of work from Claude to Kimi because Kimi is more direct and willing to get the job done. Investor Chamath Palihapitiya warned that if American companies have to pay several times the price for equivalent intelligence, the closed-source model simply cannot compete in the long run. Jack Dorsey also publicly endorsed open source.

On the other hand, some are concerned that China's open model will drive down prices, weakening America's incentive to invest in cutting-edge models. They advocate for using regulation and national security to restrict Chinese models.

As a result, the American AI community is splitting into two camps: one side is beginning to adopt Chinese models, urging the U.S. to follow suit with open source, while the other side is realizing they can't compete on price and are starting to discuss how to shut it down.

China has not only narrowed the model gap but has also altered the rules of competition, forcing America to choose between "following" and "blocking."
