Claim: US Military AI Contract Lacks Killer Robot Red Lines, Google DeepMind Researcher Resigns

According to Berkeley AI Monitoring, Google DeepMind AI security researcher Alex Turner has announced his resignation. He stated that Google allowed the U.S. military to use AI for classified missions without prohibiting mass surveillance and autonomous weapons without human control in the contract.

Previously, Turner organized over 250 employees to sign a joint letter and submitted a 25-page alternative proposal to Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, hoping to introduce human oversight and an independent review mechanism for military AI. The proposal was ultimately not accepted, leading to his resignation in June this year.

Google stated that it still opposes the use of AI for autonomous weapons and domestic mass surveillance lacking appropriate human oversight. Turner pointed out that these commitments are not binding. Google had already removed the clauses prohibiting the development of weapons and surveillance technology from its AI principles as early as 2025.
