Visa: AI Agent Pay Gaining Momentum, x402 Processes Around $15 Million in On-Chain Transaction Volume

BlockBeats News, July 16th, Visa released a joint research report with Artemis titled "Agentic Payments from the Ground Up," analyzing the development of AI Agent Payments and on-chain data.

The report shows that AI Agent payments are mainly divided into two categories: one category represents users for high-value commercial payments such as flight booking, subscription management; the other category is small-value payments between machines, such as API calls, purchase of computing resources, typically less than 1 dollar.

The machine payment protocol x402, hatched by Coinbase and Cloudflare and later managed by the Linux Foundation, has processed approximately $15 million in adjusted transaction volume since its launch in May 2025, with a total of about 1.096 billion transactions, mainly concentrated on the Base, Solana, and Polygon networks.

Another machine payment protocol, the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP) built by Stripe and Tempo with support from Visa, has settled around $25,000 and processed about 115,000 transactions since its launch in March 2026.

Visa stated that the development of AI Agent payments has driven the demand for low-cost, high-frequency machine-native payment infrastructure, where stablecoins and blockchain networks may become integral to micro-payment scenarios. The report suggests that the future payment system may not be replaced solely by bank cards or stablecoins, but rather a fusion of both in different scenarios.
