WSJ: Apple Regards OpenAI as the Next Android, Uses Lawsuit to Buy Time

According to Dongcha Beating's monitoring, Apple's lawsuit against OpenAI may not just be about protecting trade secrets.

The Wall Street Journal believes that this lawsuit continues Apple's strategy of countering Android from years ago. Steve Jobs once threatened a "thermonuclear war" against Android, and Apple later engaged in an eight-year legal battle with companies like Samsung.

This time, OpenAI's AI hardware has not been released yet, but Apple has already taken action. The lawsuit may slow down OpenAI's recruitment of Apple employees and also increase the legal risks in its hardware development.

OpenAI has entered the hardware market through the acquisition of io Products founded by Jony Ive, aiming to develop a set of devices that reduce user reliance on smartphone screens. Apple's own AI product progress has been slow, making it more essential to buy time for the next round of device competition.

However, lawsuits can only hold back the opponent and cannot create the next generation of products for Apple. Whether Apple can hold onto the iPhone will still ultimately depend on its products.
