BlockBeats News, July 4th, Serenity stated that a floating AI data center utilizing ocean cooling is already a reality, offering a significant advantage in power savings due to natural seawater cooling. This concept is particularly friendly to regions facing land scarcity, similar to the idea of "edge computing." Samsung Heavy Industries plans to launch the first commercial floating AI data center in 2028 with a capacity of around 50MW. Keppel in Singapore is also advancing a similar project, expected to be operational in the same year.
Serenity also mentioned that Microsoft's previous exploration focused on underwater submerged data centers, known as Project Natick, has now been terminated. This differs from the current discussion of data centers floating on the sea surface, addressing the two major pain points of AI infrastructure: power and cooling. The modular and movable nature of these centers naturally suits areas where land is scarce.
