BlockBeats News, July 1st. According to two senior Iranian officials, Iran is determined to seek international recognition of its control over the Strait of Hormuz and the right to levy charges on vessels entering and exiting the Gulf, even if it means resorting to the use of force. Under a temporary agreement reached this month with the United States aimed at ending a three-month standoff, Iran has agreed to allow vessels to pass through the strait free of charge within 60 days. However, Iran believes that the agreement wording allows it to continue controlling which vessels can pass and the navigational route of these vessels within this narrow waterway.
The officials also stated that Iran is committed to ensuring that this control is formally recognized in the long term after the expiration of the temporary agreement. Until there is consensus on this issue, their negotiators will not shift to other contentious topics in the peace talks with Washington.
