Federal Reserve Chair Powell's Newly Appointed Advisors Are All Central Bank Veterans of Nearly 30 Years, Marking the First Round of Personnel Changes Since Taking Office

BlockBeats News, June 26: Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Wash has appointed two senior Fed economists as advisors. They are Daniel Covitz, one of the three deputy directors in the Research and Statistics Division, and Eric Ernststrom, Senior Associate Director in the Monetary Affairs Division. Both have nearly 30 years of experience at the Fed and are well-versed in the Fed's operations. Last week, Wash also announced the formation of five special task forces to review the central bank's communication methods, data analysis, and asset portfolio management. He mentioned that these task forces will be composed of external experts with support from internal Fed subject matter experts.

Covitz provided materials for Wash's speeches multiple times during Wash's tenure as a Fed governor from 2006 to 2011, focusing on financial stability and credit markets. Ernststrom specializes in monetary policy and financial market analysis. Last year, he developed models to assess the probabilities of various economic scenarios and estimated that by 2025, the risk of a "soft landing" scenario had shifted to the coexistence of high inflation and weak growth. In February this year, the two collaborated on research explaining why long-term bond yields rose during Fed rate cuts, attributing it to investors demanding higher compensation for adverse supply shock risks and federal deficit expansion. They did not find that the market had lost confidence in the Fed's ability to maintain inflation close to the 2% target.
