Former White House AI Advisor Dean Ball Joins OpenAI to Lead Frontier Policy Team

According to Perceiving Waves monitoring, Dean Ball, former White House AI Advisor and Senior Research Fellow at the Future of Humanity Institute (FHI), announced that he will officially join OpenAI on July 6 as the head of the newly formed "Strategic Futures" team. Ball will report directly to OpenAI's Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon while retaining his non-resident Senior Research Fellow position at FHI.

The newly established "Strategic Futures" team is a small, highly autonomous policy team whose core mission is to shape cutting-edge AI policy and internal governance. Its specific focus areas include mitigating existential risks, large model recursive self-improvement, the impact of technology on the labor market, and communication with key stakeholders such as advanced labs and the U.S. federal government. The team's responsibilities span external policy initiatives and internal mechanism design, requiring close collaboration with technical researchers, the Preparedness team, legal experts, and the National Security and Global Affairs team.

Dean Ball previously served as a White House AI Advisor and contributed to the drafting of the U.S. government's AI strategy. In his personal blog, Ball stated that his decision to join OpenAI stemmed from his views on cutting-edge AI governance. Ball believes that while AI will require regulation, it will also become a novel governance technology, with key AI governance decisions likely to be made internally within labs rather than by external bodies. To drive substantive AI policy research, one must be at the forefront of technology to understand its underlying principles.

The "Strategic Futures" team is currently recruiting interdisciplinary members. Ball revealed that although the team's work is heavily reliant on a foundational understanding of technology, candidates are not required to have a background in machine learning or AI policy. Ball aims to build a team with diverse perspectives and heterogeneous knowledge structures, and the team has now opened communication channels to external applicants.
