BlockBeats News, June 16th. According to Bloomberg, the UK's energy regulator Ofgem is assessing whether data centers should be required to reduce electricity consumption during periods of system stress. This move is part of the UK's measures to address the surge in electricity demand caused by the rapid development of artificial intelligence and cloud computing.
In its latest policy update, Ofgem stated that it is exploring the need to introduce mandatory demand reduction as a backup mechanism into the regulatory framework. The regulator believes that if more effective load management can be imposed on large electricity users, the power system will have greater flexibility to accommodate additional electricity demand while ensuring supply reliability.
In other words, as AI data centers become the new "super electricity consumers," the UK regulatory body is considering granting the grid operator the authority to require data centers to temporarily reduce computing power or electricity consumption in extreme situations to ease grid pressure and avoid supply risks. This reflects the growing contradiction globally between the expansion of AI infrastructure and electricity supply capacity.
